From their spec sheets, not ours

Permanent lighting brands, compared honestly

No permanent lighting brand wins every category — anyone who tells you otherwise is selling the brand they carry. From each manufacturer's own published materials: Bosso publishes the brightest professional fixture (72 lumens, dedicated warm white), Gemstone publishes the strongest warranty (lifetime lights, 10-year parts, transferable), Trimlight publishes the most transparent pricing, and Govee is the cheapest by a mile as a DIY kit. We install Bosso — and this page tells you where it wins, where it doesn't, and what none of the spec sheets will tell you.

Where each brand actually stands

Every value below comes from the manufacturer's own website, retrieved July 2026. Where a brand doesn't publish a number, we say so — that's a finding, not a gap in our research.

“Not published” means the manufacturer states nothing for that factor — which is not the same as “no.” †Trimlight's “lifetime” is described as estimated part lifespan and daytime use may void it; Gemstone's warranty requires registration within 30 days and is transferable once; EverLights publishes conflicting terms across its own pages. Also sold in the metro: Watts Lights, a Calgary manufacturer distributed through dealer networks — it publishes 110 lumens per fixture and a −40°F rating, with a parts-only warranty of up to 5 years that leaves service labor to the customer unless the dealer covers it in writing.

What the spec sheets don't say

Nobody publishes a cold rating — except the DIY kit

Of these six manufacturers, the only one publishing an operating temperature range is Govee: −4°F to −22°F depending on model. Minnesota sees colder than both most winters. The professional brands' systems demonstrably run up here — but since no manufacturer puts a number on it, the install quality is your actual weather protection.

“Lifetime” warranties have asterisks

Trimlight's product pages describe its lifetime warranty as an estimate of part lifespan and note that daytime usage may void it. Gemstone's genuinely strong warranty is void if not registered within 30 days of install. Read the terms before you sign — or ask us and we'll walk you through any brand's, including ones we don't carry.

Some “warranties” are subscriptions

At least one brand in this category advertises a lifetime warranty that is actually a benefit of a monthly app subscription — stop paying, lose the coverage. A warranty that bills you monthly is a service contract. We think the distinction matters, so we're telling you it exists.

The warranty is only as good as the truck that shows up

Every professional brand here sells through dealers, and the pattern across the category's complaints is the same: people love the lights on day one and are frustrated in year three when service calls go unanswered. Whoever you hire — us included — ask them directly: who services this in year three, and how fast?

Our cards, on the table

Why we install Bosso — and where it loses

We chose Bosso for two published specs and one practical one: the brightest professional fixture in the category (72 lumens with a true warm-white diode — white that doesn't drift purple), and the app, which you will touch a hundred times more often than the hardware. Where does it lose? Gemstone publishes a longer warranty, and both Gemstone and JellyFish offer control that doesn't depend on the cloud. Those are real advantages and we won't pretend otherwise.

Our answer to both gaps is the install, because that's the part we control: surge protection standard on every controller, firmware updated before the crew leaves, track fastened for ice — and our own workmanship warranty on top of Bosso's 5-year parts coverage, serviced by the crew that did your install. See the full spec on what we install and what it costs.

If you want the longest paper warranty

Gemstone is the honest answer — lifetime lights, 10-year parts, transferable. Register it within 30 days or it's void.

If you want the cheapest way in

Govee. Genuinely. A few hundred dollars, up in a weekend if you're handy — with tape, a 12-month warranty, and you on the ladder when something fails.

If you want the brightest published fixture

Bosso (72 lm) among pro dealer brands; Watts (110 lm) if a dealer near you carries it and puts labor coverage in writing.

If you want it done once and serviced locally

That's the job we built Gray Duck Lighting to do — and it's less about the badge on the box than the crew on the ladder.

Comparison questions

Asked and answered

What is the best permanent outdoor lighting brand?

There is no single winner — the spec sheets split. Based on each manufacturer's own published materials (July 2026): Bosso publishes the brightest professional fixture at 72 lumens per light with dedicated warm-white diodes; Gemstone Lights publishes the strongest warranty (lifetime on lights, 10 years on parts, transferable); Trimlight publishes the most transparent pricing ($18–35 per foot nationally); and Govee is by far the cheapest as a DIY kit at $330–860. The uncomfortable truth about this category is that brand matters less than installer: most permanent lighting complaints are about service in year two or three, not about the hardware, and warranties are only worth what the company honoring them will actually do.

Is Bosso better than Trimlight?

On published specs, Bosso wins on light output and color: 72 lumens per fixture with dedicated red, green, blue, and warm-white diodes, versus Trimlight's published 20–60 lumens from RGB-only fixtures that blend their white from color (Trimlight publishes no Kelvin rating). Trimlight counters with a patented channel design, a large dealer network, and published per-foot pricing. Trimlight advertises a lifetime warranty, but its product pages describe it as an estimate of part lifespan and note daytime usage may void it; Bosso publishes a flat 5-year parts, 1-year labor warranty. Whichever brand you choose, the install and the service plan will matter more than this paragraph.

Is Govee as good as professional permanent lighting?

For the price, Govee is impressive — that is the honest answer, and it is why the kits are the best-selling permanent lights in America. The gaps are physical, not cosmetic: Govee's own instructions mount the strip with adhesive tape and clips rather than a screwed-in channel, the warranty is 12 months versus 5 years on professional systems, and Govee's published cold ratings (−4°F on the standard kit, −22°F on their top model) are numbers Minnesota passes most Januaries. If you are handy and want to test the idea for a few hundred dollars, a kit is a reasonable way in. If you want it working in February with a local number to call, that is what the professional install is for.

What is the difference between JellyFish Lighting and Bosso?

Both are professional dealer-installed track systems with the same warranty structure (5-year parts, 1-year labor). The published spec difference is light output and white color: JellyFish publishes up to 21 lumens per bulb with whites blended from RGB, while Bosso publishes 72 lumens per fixture with a dedicated warm-white diode. JellyFish is the larger, older company with a bigger dealer network and its system works without WiFi — a genuine point in its favor, since Bosso's control runs through the cloud. JellyFish publishes no pricing; quotes are in-home only.

Do any permanent lighting brands publish a cold-weather rating?

Almost none — and that should bother Minnesota buyers more than it does. Of the six brands we compared from manufacturer materials in July 2026, the only one publishing operating temperature numbers is Govee, the DIY kit (−4°F to −22°F depending on model). Bosso, Trimlight, JellyFish, Gemstone, and EverLights publish no operating temperature range at all. The systems clearly do run through northern winters, but since no manufacturer will put a number on it, your protection is the installer: ask how the track is fastened for ice loading, whether surge protection is included, and who answers the phone when something fails in January.
