Are Permanent Christmas Lights Safe? What the Manufacturers Actually Publish

Short answer: yes, and the reason is voltage.

Longer answer, and the one worth your time: the systems themselves are inherently low-risk, but the safety paperwork in this category is a mess, and most homeowners never look at it. I went through six manufacturers' own websites and wrote down exactly what each one publishes about safety certification. Three of the six publish nothing at all.

That's not the scandal it sounds like. But you should know it before you sign, because a salesperson will almost certainly tell you the system is "UL listed," and for several brands that claim cannot be verified anywhere on the manufacturer's own site.

The quick answer

Permanent outdoor lighting runs on low-voltage DC power — typically 12V or 24V, stepped down from your household current by a transformer. That's the same class of power as landscape lighting and doorbell wiring, not the 120V running through your walls. The realistic risks are not electrocution or fire from the fixtures; they're a bad transformer connection, water intrusion at a splice, and the ladder. Of the six major brands, only JellyFish publishes both a UL and an ETL claim covering named components. Gemstone publishes "either an ETL or UL certification." Trimlight, EverLights, and Govee publish no safety listing in their product pages at all — which is not the same as being uncertified, but it does mean nobody can verify it for you.

Why voltage is the part that actually matters

The strands on your roof aren't carrying house current. A transformer converts 120V down to low-voltage DC before anything goes up on the fascia, so what's running through the track is in the same family as your landscape path lights.

Trimlight is the one brand that puts this front and center in its safety FAQ:

"Is Trimlight low voltage? Yes, Trimlight runs on safe, low-voltage 12V power, making it ideal for residential use."

Gemstone publishes a maximum of one watt per bulb at full brightness. EverLights ships a 24V power supply. Bosso publishes 0.96W per light. These are small numbers by design.

The practical implication: a nicked wire on a low-voltage run behaves very differently from a nicked wire on a 120V circuit. It's a failure, not a hazard. That's the whole reason this product category can exist on the outside of a house through Minnesota winters.

What each manufacturer publishes about certification

Here's where it gets uneven. These are legally distinct designations — UL Listed, ETL Listed, "UL Recognized components," and "tested to UL standards" all mean different things, and "UL rated" isn't a UL designation at all.

A few honest readings of that table.

JellyFish publishes the most. It's the only one naming both marks and applying them to specific components. Its own wording varies across three pages, but it's publishing the most verifiable claim in the category.

"Not published" does not mean "not certified." I want to be emphatic here, because it would be easy and dishonest to imply otherwise. Trimlight and EverLights may well have certification they simply don't put on their websites. What I can tell you is that I looked, and it isn't there.

Watch the wording on the brand we sell. We install Bosso, and Bosso says "UL rated," which is not one of UL's actual designations — those are Listed, Recognized, and Classified. Bosso also scopes the claim to "every component in our system," which reads closer to component-level recognition than a listing of the finished system. I'd rather tell you that myself than have you find it later.

An IP rating is not a safety listing. Govee publishes IP67 and IP68 ratings. That's ingress protection — how well it keeps water out. It says nothing about electrical safety testing. They get conflated constantly.

The three risks that are actually real

Nobody's house has burned down over 12 volts. Here's what does go wrong.

The transformer connection. This is the one place in the system where household current is involved. It needs a proper exterior-rated outlet, and the transformer needs to be mounted where water can't pool on it. This is a install-quality question, not a product question.

Water at the splices. Every one of these systems has connection points that live outside through freeze-thaw cycles. Water gets in, freezes, expands, and you lose a section. It's the most common failure we see, and it's almost always about how the connections were sealed — which is really a question about who installed it.

The ladder. Genuinely the biggest risk in this entire category, and the reason permanent lighting exists. You install it once, professionally, instead of climbing a ladder in November every year for twenty years. Trimlight's safety FAQ leads with ladder injuries too, and they're right to.

What about leaving them on all winter?

Two things to know, and one of them is a warranty trap.

Heat is the enemy of LED lifespan. Every brand rates its LEDs at roughly 50,000 hours, but that figure assumes evening use, not continuous operation. Trimlight publishes the most specific ladder on this — holiday-only use might last 30 to 40 years, normal use 20 to 30, but running 12 to 16 hours a day drops the expectation to roughly 7 to 8 years.

The trap: Trimlight's product pages carry the note "Daytime usage may void the warranty." If you were planning to run these around the clock, read your warranty terms first. We wrote a full breakdown of the warranty fine print across the category.

Do you need an electrician?

Not for the lighting system itself. It plugs into a standard exterior outlet.

You need one if you don't have an exterior outlet where the controller needs to live. That should be flagged during the estimate, not discovered on install day — ask anyone quoting you to confirm where the transformer and controller are going and whether the outlet exists.

Questions worth asking before you sign

  1. What safety listing does this specific product carry, and can you show me where the manufacturer publishes it?
  2. Is it a listing on the finished system, or on the components?
  3. What voltage does the system run at?
  4. Where does the transformer mount, and is there an existing exterior outlet?
  5. How are the outdoor connections sealed against freeze-thaw?

If someone tells you a brand is "UL listed," it's a fair question to ask them to show you where the manufacturer says so. On several brands in this category, they won't be able to — and how they handle that question tells you a lot about who you're dealing with.
